The Skydive

What kind of parachute will we use?

The parachutes used today bear little resemblance to the classic round parachutes of years past. Today, nearly all jumpers use “ram-air” parachutes. These are rectangular in shape and, when open, act like an airplane wing. They are more like gliders than umbrellas. The aerodynamics of the parachute provides it with exceptional maneuverability, allowing the jumper to land almost anywhere he/she wishes. This wing shape is also what makes the tiptoe soft landings possible.

Skydive Key West uses only UPT Sigma Tandem Systems. These systems are top of the line and the best in the industry.

  How fast do you fall?

Terminal velocity of a tandem is approximately 120 miles per hour.

How long does the skydive last?

You enjoy a 15 minute sightseeing tour over the beautiful Florida Keys. Once you leave the plane, there are 40 exhilirating seconds of freefall and a breathtaking 5 minute ride once the parachute opens!

What will the skydive feel like?

The sensation of freefall is more like flying than falling, and is intensely exciting and liberating. The canopy flight is peaceful and relaxing.

Will I get the stomach in my throat feeling when we jump?

No, The sensation of freefall is more like floating. There isn’t a rollercoast like feeling when you jump out of a plane.

What happens if the parachute doesn’t open?

Although it very rarely happens that your main parachute will fail to open properly, We always have a reserve parachute. In addition, all of Skydive Key West’s Parachutes are equipped with an Automated Activation Device (AAD), which will automatically open the reserve parachute should the jumpers be unable to. Also, we have a full-time FAA Rigger maintaining the parachutes on site at all times.

  How high is the jump?

We generally jump from 10,500 ft. because we find that that is the best balance between time in the plane, temperature when you jump out and the experience of freefall. That being said, we are happy to take you to any altitude that the plane will go (up to 13,500 ft) for the same price! As Skydive Key West is one of the top 10 places in the world to skydive, your ride to altitude will be an exceptionally scenic experience!

  Where do we land?

We land in a grass field on the airport property.

  What’s the landing like?

Most landings are quite soft, with most people doing a gentle stand-up landing. Under certain conditions and at the discretion of the Instructor, some people make a gentle sit-down landing.

  Can I jump solo?

No. At Skydive Key West, you must jump with an certified tandem instructor.

Video & Photos

Can I get photos & video of my jump?

Yes, Skydive Key West operates a freefall cinematography business right here on site. We can provide you with a video filmed at 1080p (or 4k) and 12mp digital stills of your skydive. If you would like to purchase them; you will receive your photos and video right after your jump.

Can we get one video for our whole group?

No, the time/distance gap between jumpers leaving the plane preclude a camera person from being able to film more than one student at a time.

Can I bring my own camera with me on the jump?
